June M. "Jackie" Heeney

June 21, 1922 — June 5, 2021

June M. “Jackie” Heeney, 98, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021 at home in her family’s arms.  Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Holy Cross Parish St. Michael.  Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 21, 2021 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

June was born the daughter of Dave and Alice (Hendrickson) Hallstrom on June 21, 1922 in Wakefield, Nebraska. She graduated from Wakefield High School in 1939.  She eloped and married James William Heeney December 31,1941 in Ponca NE. Following the wedding, their loose change bought a 10-cent cup of coffee and a doughnut. They honeymooned in Ponca at a sister’s house on a pullout sofa. They enjoyed dancing in the ballroom above the “Bloody Bucket” in Nacora NE. That is where the AKA “Jackie” began. From her marriage were daughters, Patricia, Marijo, Gerri, Karen and Peggy Jean and sons, Richard and Daniel.

She was first employed as a “soda jerk” at Rexall Drug.  After raising their daughters, she took work at Professional Alterations as a talented seamstress, retiring at age 90.

She delighted in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren loving them with a tender heart. She inspired many Facebook posts. She enjoyed traveling and no car left the driveway without her. She challenged anyone to a game of Dominoes. She reveled in taking photos and creating albums for all her family. She could play the organ without reading music. She was proud of all the books she read, her knitting and crocheting, and her Swedish Heritage. Her flower beds graced her yard. Her passion for animals included horses, birds, turtles, and dog, Dancer.  She loved John Wayne westerns, making homemade ice cream, and Christmas meat pies. Many have enjoyed her famous Beef Brisket and homemade fries. The neighbor kids could always count on a popsicle or a cookie.

She was a member of St. Michael Church and St. Michael Alter Society, working uncountable church dinners. She attended the Iowa Caucuses and exercised her woman’s right to vote in many elections.

Left to cherish her memories are daughters, Pat, Marijo, Gerri, and Karen; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim “Billy”; daughter, Peggy Jean; sons, Richard and Daniel; sister, Lorraine O’Leary; brothers, Maurice, Vernon, Duane, and Marlowe Hallstrom who she missed immensely.

She often joked, “I’m living too long. It’s my appliances that are dying.”

The family is eternally grateful for the neighbors who were so kind and helpful to mom in our absence.

The sisters give thanks to her primary caregiver, Mariojo who for the last 6 years allowed mom to live a full life and die with dignity at home. Mom held you in her arms when you were born.  It’s fitting you held her in yours when she died.  A shout out to dog, Dancer for sharing ice cream cups and guarding the front door.
